Members' profiles

The current members of LaRGe Mainz are Andrey Launov, Alexander Mosthaf, Thorsten Schank, Damir Stijepic and Klaus Wälde. They follow independent research avenues but also work closely together.

Research of Andrey Launov focuses at quantification of welfare-improving government policies in a labour market with information asymmetries. Underlying is the fact that individually optimal choices in such a market are frequently different from socially efficient ones, which creates the scope for government intervention. While some of the real-life policies prove to be working, others clearly do not. Understanding behavioural responses to changing institutional environment, therefore, forms a key part of his research.

Alexander Mosthaf is working on employment dynamics and focusses for instance on the effect of unemployment on individuals, the role of personal traits on job mobility and the wage mobility of workers. In further work he investigates gender diversification in leadership positions of firms. Another focus of his research is attrition in population studies used for the empirical analysis of labor markets.

The research interests of Thorsten Schank are mainly in applied labor economics including wage structure and earnings mobility, works councils, hours of work and the effects of foreign inward investment. He currently focuses on the methodology and use of linked employer-employee datasets (LEEDS), where he investigates inter alia ways of estimating the contribution of both worker- and plant-level (observed and unobserved) characteristics to wages.

Damir Stijepic studies the impact of the advancing integration of the world economy and the information technology revolution on the labor market. In particular, he analyzes how globalization and technical change have affected the returns to the skills that allow workers to match with the preferred firms. In this context, he develops new measures that account for the multidimensionality of skills and that reflect the worker's versatility.

Klaus Wälde's work is inspired by the belief that all men are created equal. But not all men live equal. Somewhere between birth and life, equality gets lost. This is obvious from looking at any distribution of income, wealth, consumption, happiness or the like. This view leads him to understanding the role public institutions play in shaping equality - or inequality. For more background, see here.
